What is the Jachae rice?
The term ‘Jache’ is used as the meaning of ‘early rice’ which is farmed only in a certain part of adjacent area around Icheon with its high quality.
※ ‘Jache’ has some different meanings by changed rice’s features with times.
Historical records
- Agriculture Book in Joseon Dynasty)
- The characteristics of Jachae had been mentioned in various agriculture books in 1491, 1682, 1771, 1776, 1798, 1825.
- There is a statement saying, “The quality of rice from Icheon is very good.”
- In a book of 1914,
- There is a record ‘this rice was traded at the price 10% higher than other varieties, due to the high quality’.
- In a book of 1955,
- It is said that “Icheon’s early-ripening rice is one of thebest local specialties in Korea. Every 15th of June (lunar calendar), the rice hasbeen presented to kings’.
The Characteristics of Jachae Rice
- Early Harvest Maturity
- A presence of arista
- The color of ear during the early stage : White
- The color of ear during the yellow ripe stage: Yellow
- Grown in the Fertile Earth
- Water shouldn’t be dry.
- Plant in the early March
※ The amount of land appropriate to meet the demands of this variety is quite limited. Also this variety requires the fertile earth, lots of fertilizers and efforts. ※ The color of rice is bluish white. The taste is rich in oil and flavor.
